CHAPTER 17

“Are you through with Rosa, Detective?” Gina Madsen asked as she walked into the kitchen. She’d gotten dressed and attempted, somewhat unsuccessfully, to cover her blotchy skin and the dark circles under her eyes.

“Yes, she just left. She’s a very nice lady,” Jeff said. “She cares deeply for you.”

“The feeling is mutual. I feel very lucky to have found her. Now, Detective, what would you like me to do?”

“Well, I suppose the best place for you to start is how and where you and Monty met. Just continue up to the present time, and if I would like to know more about something, I’ll ask you. Rosa gave me permission to record our conversation. May I do the same with you?”

“Sure,” Gina said, pouring herself another cup of coffee and holding the pot up and raising her eyebrows towards Jeff.

“No, thanks. I’ve had several already.”

“I met Monty…”

Gina started with how she’d met Monty at the Bootlegger Tiki bar and continued up until she’d moved in this house, married him, and then learned he’d been murdered.

“Alright, Gina. That gives me the background on your relationship. I’d like to ask you a few specific questions. First of all, do you know who his attorney is and if he had a will?”

“Yes. His attorney is Nate Solomon. He’s here in Palm Springs. He called last night to express his condolences and shock when he heard about Monty.”

“Did he say anything last night to you about the will?” Jeff asked.

“Yes. He told me that Monty had gone to his office last week to sign a new will that he’d drawn up at Monty’s request. He told me that he was the executor of the will, and Monty had changed his will to exclude his son and leave his entire estate to me.”

“Did you know he was going to do that?”

“Not really. A couple of times he’d mentioned that he was going to do that because of his son’s gambling addiction, but I never followed up on it. You see, I could care less about Monty’s money. I didn’t marry him for his money. I married him because I loved him. May sound schmaltzy and old-fashioned, but it’s the truth. Without Monty, my life has no meaning.”

“Do you know if his son knew Monty was disinheriting him?”

“No. We really never talked about things like that. I know he felt badly about what his son had become, and he partially blamed himself for not being there for his son. He said his focus had been on his movies, not a son he’d had while he was briefly married.”

“Do you know what happened to his son’s mother?”

“Not specifically. He mentioned once that she was Hispanic, and he hoped that she was living well in Mexico. He told me that when he’d made it as a movie star, he’d given her a large amount of money, because he felt he hadn’t been a very good husband or father when he was trying to make it in the movies.
